HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 27) -- Derek Miller nosed ahead on the 30th circuit and showed the way to his first win of the season in the 50-lap Top Dog race, the featured event of Saturday evening's Towne Bank 200 presented by GEICO to benefit the March of Dimes for the Arena Racing Hampton Roads Pro Series at the Hampton Coliseum.
Jordan Wood drew the pole for the event. He shared the front row with Robbie Davis. Craig Carlton and Charlie Green occupied Row 2. Miller launched from the 12th spot on the 14-car grid, to the outside of defending series champ Adam Florian.
As the race got going, Davis hung tough on the outside and edged ahead of Wood by half a car-length at the end of the first three laps.
The first caution flag waved on lap 4 when Cody Turbitt did a half-roll in the middle of the pack off the second corner, spelling an early end to his night.
On the double-file restart, Davis easily cleared Wood's machine and brought Green along with him, to second. Matt Midgett tried to capitalize on the opening and ducked underneath Wood in a bid for third.
On lap 6, Green overhauled Davis to take the lead. His stay at the front was short-lived, however. On the very next circuit, a major fracas broke out in Turn 2. When the smoke cleared, half the field was involved to some degree, including Green, Davis, Travis Wall, Florian, Sparky West, Nelson Moody and Mike Dayton. Green and Davis were sidelined by the incident.
Back under green, Wood was the new leader, slipping ahead of Midgett. Craig Carlton moved up to challenge Midgett for the runner-up spot, but was rebuffed. Meanwhile, Miller was on the move, swiping third from Carlton.
The third caution flag flew on lap 11 when Florian spun off Turn 2. The yellow flag interrupted Miller, who was in the process of taking over second from Midgett.
On the restart, Wood quickly cleared Midgett and left the lane open for Miller, who bypassed Midgett to pick up second place. Behind them, Scott Prillaman went after Aaron Leach for fourth.
Caution flag #4 was displayed on lap 20 when West spun at the start/finish line.
Back under green, Wood was unable to clear Miller, who remained to his outside and began edging toward the lead. Miller finally grabbed the top spot on lap 30.
Miller and Wood continued their door-to-door battle until lap 34 when they made contact on the backstretch. While Miller drove away, Wood was left with an awkward angle of entry into Turn 3 and he spun out, collecting Moody.
Lining up for the restart, Miller now shared the front row with Leach. He cleared Leach's #60 machine when the green flag went back in the air. Midgett tried to follow Miller's cue, but couldn't overtake Leach. Meanwhile, Florian regained the fourth spot.
The last of the race's six yellow flags was unfurled on lap 42 as Carlton, Wall and Moody spun off Turn 4. Carlton and Moody were unable to continue.
As the field gathered for a dash to the finish, Miller and Leach were again out front, followed by Florian and Midgett.
Under green for the last time, Miller bolted ahead of Leach and brought Florian with him, to second. Miller opened a two-length advantage over Florian and, by the end, that gap had grown to three lengths as Miller eased to the win.
Florian tailed Miller to the line, in the runner-up position, while Leach, Prillaman and Dayton completed the top five. Midgett headed up the second five, followed by West, Wood and Wall. Carlton was credited with 10th.
In the battle for the $10,000 series title, Florian lost one point to Prillaman when he finished behind him in the A Main, but gained two in the Top Dog race for a net gain of one point on the night. Heading into next weekend's Friday/Saturday doubleheader, Prillaman holds an 11-point advantage, 347-336.
It's worth noting that each driver's two worst outings (poor finishes or missed races) are thrown out before the final points are tabulated. In the current "adjusted" standings, Florian has pulled to within four points of Prillaman's lead, 290-286.
A Main
Starting from the pole position, Scott Prillaman fought off an early challenge from Adam Florian, then cruised to his second straight win in the 50-lap A Main. For the season, Prillaman's record shows four A Main wins and one B Main victory.
First and second in the standings, Prillaman and Florian shared the front row for the start and remained side-by-side for the first three circuits before Prillaman edged ahead. Jordan Wood rushed to fill the opening underneath Florian, but couldn't pull off a pass for second.
The only yellow flag flew on lap 12 when Josh Ayer spun in Turn 4 and collected Spencer Saunders, nearly launching Saunders over the outside wall.
Back under green, Prillaman and Florian pulled away in nose-to-tail formation, half a length ahead of the third-place tussle between Wood and Robbie Davis. Deeper in the field, Derek Miller, who led qualifying, moved up to challenge Curtis Hughes for fifth.
On lap 15, Miller nosed ahead of Hughes to crack the top five. Four laps later, Travis Wall overtook Hughes for sixth, the final Top Dog transfer spot.
Closer to the front, Miller was on the charge again, nabbing fourth place from Davis on lap 24. He cleared Davis' machine as the field sped toward the crossed flags.
At the halfway point, Prillaman enjoyed a two-length advantage over Florian. As the second half of the event unfolded, the gap contined to grow. By the finish, Prillaman's margin of victory had swelled to nearly half a straightaway.
Florian was the runner-up, followed by Wood, Miller, Davis and Wall. The top six drivers all advanced to the Top Dog finale.
B Main
Nelson Moody led all the way from the pole to nab his first win of the season in the 50-lap B Main.
The event got off to a rocky start with four caution flags in the first 10 circuits. As the field prepared to return to green on lap 15, Moody showed the way, followed by Mike Dayton, Denver Alvis, Aaron Leach and Charlie Green.
As the race resumed, Moody quickly established a slim margin over Dayton, who headed a nose-to-tail procession.
On lap 18, Leach ducked under Alvis in a bid for third. Alvis rebuffed that charge. Leach was back at it, though, on lap 24. On lap 25, Alvis and Leach tangled off Turn 2 and Green pounced, passing both drivers to take over third. Leach emerged from the exchange in fourth, while Alvis drifted to the rear of the pack.
At lap 30, Moody enjoyed a full-straightaway edge over Dayton, who was up by half a straightaway over Green.
The fifth yellow flag flew on lap 35 when Alvis and Chris Raiford made hard contact in Turn 1. The incident sidelined Raiford for the evening.
On the restart, Moody gained a one-length advantage, while Green hounded Dayton for second. Green slipped underneath Dayton on lap 46 and completed the pass on lap 47. Before that lap was officially in the books, though, the final caution flag appeared, negating the position swap.
Under green for the final time, Moody led Dayton, Green and Leach in a four-car breakaway. At the finish, Moody was the winner by a car-length as the top four all held their spots and moved on to the Top Dog race. Landon Florian was fifth, bypassing Jason Styron on the white-flag lap.
C Main
Cody Turbitt bolted out front on the start and drove to his third feature victory of the season in the 50-lap C Main.
Two-time series champ Travis Miller drew the pole for the event, sharing the front row with Turbitt. As the race got under way, Turbitt remained on Miller's flank until they reached Turns 3 and 4 for the first time. Through the corner, Turbitt gained the upper hand as Miller skittered loose.
By lap 8, Turbitt had opened a half-straightaway margin over Miller, who enjoyed a full-straightaway advantage over third-place Mark Brooks.
The first of the race's five caution flags flew on lap 11 when Jimmy Greybeck spun in Turn 2. He was directed to the rear of the field, joined by Brittany Bangas.
Only one more lap was completed before the second yellow flag appeared as Chris Crecelius overturned off the second corner and slid halfway down the backstretch on his roof. The incident chased Crecelius to the sidelines with steering problems.
On the restart, Sparky West slipped underneath Brooks in a bid for third. He completed the pass and left the inside lane open for Matt Midgett, Craig Carlton, Bangas and Greybeck. The shuffle allowed Turbitt and Miller to pull away by a straightaway.
Caution #3 came out on lap 21 when Greybeck encountered difficulties along the backstretch.
Back under green, Turbitt eked out a slim edge over Miller as the top five broke from the pack. The run was cut short, though, as Bangas spun in Turn 2 on lap 29 to prompt the fourth yellow flag.
On the restart, Turbitt led Miller, Midgett and Carlton in a four-car breakaway at the head of the pack. Miller began sneaking peeks to the inside of the leader, but Turbitt held him off and opened a one-length gap.
The final yellow flag was displayed on lap 48 when Greybeck spun in Turn 2, setting up a "green-white-checkered" sprint to the checkers.
On the last restart, Miller tried an outside move on Turbitt. The leader pinched him off as they rolled toward Turn 1. Sensing an opportunity, third-place Midgett motored underneath Miller as Turbitt darted away.
At the finish, Turbitt was the winner by three car-lengths over Miller. Miller, however, failed to clear the post-race inspection and was disqualified. Midgett moved up to second in the amended rundown, followed by Carlton and West. The top four moved on to the Top Dog feature. Brittany Bangas was fifth.
The event marked the debut of Dylan Crumpler and the Bethel High School race team. Crumpler started shotgun in the 10-car lineup and brought the Bruin-mobile home in ninth, on the lead lap, gaining valuable experience.
Youth Series
Connor Hall recovered from an early setback and rolled to his fifth straight victory in a 30-lapper for the Youth Series.
Cullen Roberts started on the pole and grabbed the lead out of Turn 2 on the opening lap, pulling ahead of Hall. Macy Causey tagged along with Roberts and snagged second place.
At the beginning of lap 2, Causey and Hall tangled at the start/finish line and Causey spun to bring out the first caution flag. Causey and Hall were both relegated to the rear of the field.
Back under green, Roberts pulled away from second-place Patrick Groff by five car-lengths. Meanwhile, Hall was slicing through the pack. He picked off Groff for second on lap 4. By lap 7, he was parked on Roberts' rear bumper.
On lap 11, Hall poked a fender alongside Roberts off the second corner. That bid didn't pay off. It was a different story a lap later, however, and Hall rocketed out front. Within 10 laps, he had extended his margin to nearly half a lap.
The second, and final, yellow flag flew on lap 26 when Causey and Groff locked horns on the backstretch and Groff ground to a halt in Turn 3. Groff was chased to the infield, while Causey also pulled to the sidelines during the caution period.
On the last restart, Hall bolted away from Roberts and sailed to the win, finishing a straightaway ahead of the runner-up. Gummy Cook was third to the line, while Causey and Groff were credited with fourth and fifth, respectively.
Qualifying
For the second straight event, Derek Miller topped afternoon time trials for the Pro Series, lapping the tenth-mile oval in 8.059 seconds. He edged Scott Prillaman by just 18-thousandths of a second to lead the way. Jordan Wood, Adam Florian and Anthony Perez rounded out the top five on the speed chart, all less than a tenth of a second off Miller's standard. Thirty Pro Series drivers posted qualifying efforts with only 0.435-second separating first from last.
Connor Hall paced Youth Series qualifying, at 8.550 seconds. Cullen Roberts was second-quickest, followed by Macy Causey, Patrick Groff and Gummy Cook.
