HAMPTON, Va. (Mar. 12) — Any residual mellowness from last weekend’s trio of Phish concerts will be quickly swept from the Hampton Coliseum this Saturday, Mar. 14, as Arena Racing USA’s Hampton Roads series returns to “The Mothership” with its unique brand of ultra-competitive mayhem.
Saturday’s Girl Scout Night lineup includes A, B and C Mains — 50 laps each. The top six finishers from the A Main and the top four finishers from the B and C Mains advance to the 50-lap Top Dog race, the final race of the evening.
Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and racing gets under way at 7:00. Drivers will be available to meet and greet fans before and after the program. Also, the Hampton High School band is slated to provide the entertainment during intermission.
Adult tickets are $10 and include one free kids (3-12) ticket. Additional kids tickets are $5 each. Tickets for military personnel, senior citizens and students (13-18) are $7. Kids under 3 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Tickets are available at the Coliseum Box Office, TicketMaster locations and online at . A service fee will be added to each ticket purchase.
In the current series driver standings, Adam Florian holds a 17-point edge over Derek Miller, 388-371. Jordan Wood, Scott Prillaman and Charlie Green round out the top five.
While Florian would appear to have a comfortable margin, however, that’s not necessarily the case.
At the end of the season, each driver’s two worst outings will be dropped before the final standings are tabulated. Factoring the drops into the current points rundown, Prillaman jumps from fourth to second, only seven behind Florian, 343-336.
The car owner standings, which will determine the points fund payout, closely mirror the driver rankings with the Chris Florian-owned #8 (Florian) and #98 (Prillaman) cars holding the top two spots. Taking dropped races into account, the #8 bunch is clinging to a six-point advantage, 343-337, in the quest for the $10,000 championship prize.
After one last weekend off, the series will bring down the curtain on its 2008-09 campaign on Saturday, Mar. 28, with Relay for Life Night, presented in conjunction with the American Cancer Society. Doors open at 6 p.m. and racing begins at 7.
While two events still remain on the schedule, plans are already well under way for the annual awards banquet. This year’s gala celebration is scheduled for Saturday, April 4, at the Crowne Plaza Hampton Marina on Settlers Landing Road in Hampton.
